Known for his pragmatic approach and commitment to collaboration, CentreBC Leader Mike Bernier brings extensive experience in government, community leadership, and economic development to his role as Leader of CentreBC.
Mike was first elected MLA for Peace River South in May of 2013 and is the former Minister of Education, and also served as the Parliamentary Secretary for Energy Literacy and Environment for the Ministry of Environment. Mike was re-elected in 2017 and 2020 and served as MLA for his Region until 2024.
At the Provincial level, Mike also sat as Chair of the Select Standing Committee on Children and Youth, Chair of the Select Standing Committee on Aboriginal Affairs, Chair of the Provincial Committee to review Environmental Sustainability and worked on the Special Committee to rewrite the Personal Information Protection Act. He also sat on the Cabinet Committee on Strong Economy, the Select Standing Committee on Crown Corporations, the Special Committee on Local Elections Expense Limits and was a Director of the BC Achievement Foundation.
Prior to his election to the Legislative Assembly of British Columbia, Mike served as the Mayor of Dawson Creek being first elected to Council in 2005. Mike is the Past President of the North Central Local Government Association and has also served on the Union of BC Municipalities, the Peace River Regional District Board, Chair B.C. Mayors Climate Leadership Council, Chair Community Energy Association, Vice Chair Council of Resource Community Mayors, Chair Northeast Regional Advisory Committee, Chair Northern Development Initiative Trust, Chair South Peace Economic Development Commission, and Vice Chair Site C Regional and Local Government Liaison Committee,
Mike is married to his wife Valerie and together they have five children, 8 grandchildren. He is a multi-licensed trades person and has 20 years of experience in the natural gas industry.
