FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE JANUARY 13, 2026, VANCOUVER, BC—As we navigate a world defined by the Eurasia Group as at a global “tipping point,” British Columbians are witnessing a profound dismantling of the international order.
South of the border, the United States is undergoing a political revolution that has transformed it into the principal source of global risk. From the lawless seizure of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro to threats against the sovereignty of Greenland, the Trump administration has signalled that it no longer feels bound by international law.
Experts like former UN Ambassador Bob Rae warn that Canada is now “on the menu” and faces the risk of being downgraded from a sovereign neighbour to a “junior resource appendage” of the United States. Yet, instead of meeting this existential threat with serious leadership, British Columbia’s political landscape is dominated by two parties more interested in ideological posturing than protecting our province’s integrity.
The BC NDP government is overseeing a period of unprecedented public discontent. Recent data shows that three-quarters of British Columbians believe the government is performing poorly on the cost of living and housing affordability. Premier David Eby has seen his personal approval tumble as his administration racks up record levels of deficit and debt with almost no improvements to show for it in critical areas like healthcare, education, or social services. While the NDP manages this “hard slog” of fiscal failure, they remain largely silent on the external threats to our economic success and independence.
On the other side, the BC Conservatives offer an even more volatile alternative. Their leadership is currently viewed unfavourably by 56 per cent of British Columbians, and the party has been plagued by internal instability and resignations. Rather than offering a credible plan for the province, they have focused on importing “Republican-style culture war issues” and conspiracy theories. Their recent decision to applaud international aggression in Venezuela on social media is the definition of government by clickbait—sacrificing Canadian sovereignty for a Facebook “like” while ignoring the “Donroe Doctrine” that threatens our own natural resources and Arctic security.
British Columbians deserve better than a choice between an out-of-touch government that has tanked the economy and an opposition party that acts as a “safe harbour” for extremist rhetoric. At CentreBC, we believe it is time to break the silence and level with citizens about these threats. True leadership requires an evidence-based, pragmatic approach that puts people first and politics back on track, rather than chasing the latest viral trend.
BC is in a fight—alongside the rest of Canada—for our independence, prosperity and our future. We must move past this era of performative politics. We need a government that leads with transparency and integrity, focusing on building economic resilience and defending our sovereignty against a “volatile White House”.
The risks of the next few years are too high to be left in the hands of those who prioritise clickbait over the security and well being of our province and its people.
